READING

1. Read about the Vu Lan Festival in Viet Nam and decide whether the statements are true (T) or false (F). (Đọc về lễ hội Vu Lan ở Việt Nam và xem các câu dưới đây đúng hay sai.)

Some people call it “Vu Lan bao hieu” (Parents’ Appreciation Day). This festival takes place on the 15^th day of the senventh lunar month. It is one of the largest festivals of Viet Nam after the Tet festival and it is celebrated throughout the country, especially in the south.

During the festival, people participate in many goodwill activities and perform various religious rituals. They visit pagodas and temples to worship, release animals like birds of fish, and burn incense. They also buy persents and flowers as their offerings to show their deep love and gratitude towards their parents and ancestors.

Many people go to pagadas on this occasion, wearing either a red rose if their mothers are alive or a white rose if their mothers have passed away. The rose is a symbol of love ad gratitude shown by every family towards their ancestors.

Vài người gọi nó là "Vu Lan Báo Hiếu" (Ngày tạ ơn cha mẹ). Lễ hội này diễn ra vào ngày 15 tháng 7 Âm lịch. Nó là một trong những lễ hội lớn nhất của Việt Nam sau lễ hội Tết và nó được tổ chức khắp đất nước, đặc biệt là ở miền Nam.

Trong suốt lễ hội, người ta tham gia vào nhiều hoạt động tình nghĩa và trình diễn những nghi lễ tôn giáo khác nhau. Họ thăm viếng chùa và đền thờ để thờ cúng, phóng sinh động vật như chim hoặc cá và đốt nhang. Họ cũng mua những món quà và hoa như là lễ vật của họ thể hiện tình yêu sâu thẳm và sự cảm tạ đối với ba mẹ và tổ tiên họ.

Nhiều người đi đến chùa vào dịp này, mang theo hoa hồng đỏ nếu mẹ còn sống và hoa hồng trắng nếu mẹ của họ đã mất. Hoa hồng là một biểu tượng của tình yêu và sự cảm tạ được thể hiện bởi mọi gia đình đối với tổ tiên họ.

• Religion and salary are sensitive subjects you should avoid talking about. (Tôn giáo và tiền lương là những chủ đề nhạy cảm bạn nên tránh nói về.)
